One common trait among flowers is that the first blooms produced usually have shorter stems. As the flowers are cut and the season progresses, the stem length increases. While long stems are more versatile and are generally preferred by designers, short stems can be just as useful. Here are a few reasons to embrace shorter stems!
Shorter stems are more cost effective.
At the Flower Collective, we mark down the price of short stems by 20%. All of the short stems sold still meet our quality standards, so florists can obtain the same high-quality blooms at a fraction of the cost.
Shorter stems have many uses.
Standard stem lengths of 16-24 inches are great for bouquets and tall displays, but for many items they are not necessary. Table arrangements, boutonnieres, corsages, and even floral arches can be made with short stems. Shorter stems can also be used to fill in and add depth to arrangements when used alongside longer stems.
At the Flower Collective, we encourage our growers to market their short stems (at a reduced price, of course) so that no blooms go to waste. Consider whether short stems might be useful and save you money for your next floral event!
